What to Expect

First of all, I would like to welcome you and commend you on your bravery in considering applying for help. I suspect that by this stage, you have tried all sorts of things yourself, but have come to the conclusion that the results are not satisfactory. It is one of the hardest things to acknowledge your limits and to admit you need help. However, this poses a good starting condition for your treatment trajectory, because often it makes you more receptive to new ideas and more willing to step out of your comfort zone.

Therapy is hard work and putting yourself out there is scary enough as it is. Hopefully, knowing a bit more about the structure of therapy and what to expect will help you take that first step more easily and make it less daunting.

  • Referrals can be done by your GP or you can refer yourself. All enquiries are confidential.

Fees: $200 per 50-60 mins, GST included. Payments can be done by bank transfer.

Cancellation Policy: If you need to cancel an appointment, please do so as soon as possible. There is a 50% charge for missed appointments and appointments cancelled with less than 48 hours’ notice.

  • After your application, I will reach out to you to plan a date for a first appointment, which is called an intake. The aim of an intake is to get to know each other and for us to gain a first understanding of what is going on. This is an opportunity for you to share your story and I will listen and ask additional questions. We will look at your desired outcome and what you would like to achieve. It also gives you the chance to feel if we are a good match.

  • Next session, after we have had time to reflect, we will decide how to proceed. I will provide a summary of the intake and will propose which types of therapy I think might be suitable. I will give information about them accordingly so you can make an informed decision about the best fit for you. We will establish treatment goals and incorporate these into a plan, which will form the guideline for our sessions. Lastly, we will decide together how often we will see each other (weekly, fortnightly or monthly).

  • We evaluate your treatment goals after every 5 to 10 sessions to see if we are still on track. Therapy is not just talking 1 hour a week, but it’s also implementing what you have learned in your daily life. Together we will come up with goals for you to execute before the next session and will discuss the progress at the start of each session.

  • The goal is that you gain knowledge about yourself, learn how to reflect on your thoughts, feelings and behaviour and will learn coping skills to effectively solve your problems. It is important to know that everyone keeps growing and developing throughout life, so your life won’t be perfect when therapy ends. More so, you have learned enough to regain your autonomy and feel confident to deal with problems yourself when they arise. The aim is that you will need my help less over time, which will result in longer time in between sessions and eventually an agreement when to stop. A break from therapy is the ultimate way to find out what you have learned over time and to reconnect with your own resilience and resourcefulness. If at a later stage you feel stuck, you are, of course, welcome to re-apply.
